WESTERN DESERT SAFARI (18 Days / 17 Nights)
Cairo, Alexandria, Siwa, Bahariya, Dakhla, Kharga, Luxor

Designed for the true desert enthusiast, Absolute Africa has devised this adventurous journey through Egypt’s Western desert. This enormous expanse of desert contains several oases that have only recently been easily accessible to visitors. This is a land of profound silence, lush oases, fantastic archaeological sites and Bedouin cultures. Begin in Cairo with a quick survey of the ancient sites in Giza and Saqqara. Next, drive to Alexandria for one night. The first oasis on the itinerary is the legendary Siwa oasis in the northwest corner of the country. Historically isolated from the urban cities of the Nile Valley, Siwa has a unique culture in which the inhabitants still speak Siwi, their native Berber tongue. Spend one day in this magical town that is rumored to contain the grave of Alexander the Great. Siwa is known for its traditional crafts, particularly pottery and basket-making made by the townswomen. Next on the itinerary is the Bahariya oasis to the south known for its hot springs and date palms. In Bahariya you will observe the unique oasis ecology and wildlife of mostly insects and bird life. Walk to neighboring towns like Agouz and Mandisha and walk through the maze-like villages that are reminiscent of the Medieval era. From Bahariya, make a stop at the majestic White Desert with its magical expanse of sand dunes and rock formations that illuminate spectacular colors at all different times of the day. The third stop is the Dakhla oasis which is home to a temple dedicated to Alexander the Great, numerous ancient temples and the newly discovered “Valley of the Golden Mummies.” The town capital of Dakhla is called Mut and within it are the remains of Mut el-Khorab, the ancient city that was most probably dedicated to the goddess Mut. After two nights here, your last oasis stop is Kharga. There are some impressive Christian and pharaonic ruins near town that you will visit. The fascinating Bagawat Christian cemetery is a highlight of your stay. The Christian necropolis in which this cemetery lies has a well-preserved collection of Coptic murals and decorated domes. On Day 13, you will leave the desert life behind and re-enter urban Luxor. Spend two nights here visiting the Luxor and Karnak temples and the Valley of the Kings and Queens. If time permits, you will have the opportunity to do more sight seeing across the river at the Temples of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon. Return to Cairo for your ongoing flight.
