MOROCCAN ARTS (11 days/10 nights)
Rabat, Fes, Marrakesh, Essouaria
Morocco's artistic traditions combine the geometric elegance of Islamic art, the tribal abstract traditions of the country's Berber inhabitants, and a myriad of other influences from the country's African and Andalucian contacts. This program features the work of traditional and contemporary artisans. Start with two nights in the capital city of Rabat. Visit the Hassan Mosque, the most ambitious of Almohad buildings, and a classic of this 12th century style. Visit the city's Archaeological Museum, with an exceptional collection of Roman era bronzes and many artifacts from Volubilis. Tour the potteries at nearby Sale, where excellent crafts are made with traditional designs. Drive to Fes for three nights, touring Meknes and Volubilis en route. Tour the relaxed medinas and the Bab Mansour, built of a host of materials scavenged from other parts of the country, including Roman remains from Volubilis. Continue on to Volubilis, this vast Roman complex is the largest in the country, and features classical mosaics whose designs exhibit Berber influence. Spend three nights in Fes, touring the medinas and artisan quarters. Fes has a strong leather and woodwork tradition. Spend a day touring the Atlas mountain villages of Ifrane and Azrou, known for their carpet and jewelry markets. Fly to Marrakesh for three nights. Extensive touring includes the souks, the Ben Youssef Medersa, the city's gardens, and the excellent museums. Also spend a day touring the Ourika Valley and its potteries, set amid the stunning backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. Travel to the coastal town of Essaouria for touring of the town's thuya workshops. Spend a day at leisure, soaking up the relaxed seafront atmosphere that is the town's best feature. Transfer to the airport for your international departure.
