MOROCCAN STYLE (14 days/13 nights)
Marrakesh, Essouaria, Ourzazate/Skoura, Fes
This program highlights Morocco's lush, joyous, and uniquely elegant style, which is currently taking the design world by storm. Noted for its cool and colorful tiled courtyards, enlivened with fountains, vines and potted plants, Morocco's architecture and design is a joy to the senses. Start with two nights in Marrakesh, touring the city's finest museums and monuments. Stay in one of the city's many elegant ryads. Marrakesh's ryads are the center of the country's current artistic renaissance, where traditional woodcarving, mosaic work and plasterwork is being practiced to a very high standard. Drive to the coastal town of Essouaria, whose whitewashed streets are a delight to wander. Essouaria is also the center of Morocco's thuya industry: this high quality woodcarving and inlay work is carried out in a maze of workshops along the seafront. Spend two nights at the Villa Maroc, whose elegant interiors have often been featured in international magazines. Drive to Skoura, whose fertile oases boast many grand and imposing kasbahs and whose thick mud walls are decorated with geometric designs. Spend three nights in a restored 17th century kasbah: its cool and shadowy interiors provide an atmospheric escape from the harsh surrounding terrain. Tour nearby Berber villages where thick tribal rugs are woven on ancient looms. Drive back to Marrakesh for another two nights in the city. Enjoy time at your leisure to explore the city, or simply soak up the elegance of your ryad. Travel to Fes for three nights at the Maison Bleue, the city's finest ryad. Once the family home of a noted judge and theologian, the Maison Bleue is now famed for its award-winning restaurant, where you will feast on a twelve-course meal. Tour Fes' highlights and spend a full day at either the Atlas village of Sefrou, or touring the Imperial city of Meknes and nearby Volubilis, Morocco's largest Roman ruins. Transfer to Casablanca for your international departure.
