THE ANCESTORS: Uganda & Rwanda
(12 days/11
nights)
Semliki Wildlife Reserve, Kibale
National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable
Forest, Kampala, Volcanoes National Park
This extraordinary itinerary is
a dream come true for nature enthusiasts, offering the unspoiled
beauty of Uganda and Rwanda to the adventurous traveler. Mountain
gorillas, chimpanzees, and baboons are among the wild animals that
await you on this energetic tour. Begin with two nights in Semliki
Wildlife Reserve, where your luxurious accommodation is a superb
base for a wide range of safari activities, including tracking wild
chimpanzees with the Semliki Chimp Project. After two nights at
Semliki, head to Kibale National Park, where habituated chimps are
frequently seen. Kibale is particularly rich in primates, with L'Hoest's,
red colubus, blue monkeys, olive baboons, chimps, and other species.
Spend two unforgettable days exploring Kibale before moving on to
Queen Elizabeth National Park for two nights. Boat trips along the
Kazinga Channel also offer superb wildlife viewing opportunities.
The park's varied habitat includes savannah, swamp, crater lakes,
and dense forest, all of which provide shelter for a dizzying number
of bird species. Spend two nights here and then head to Bwindi Impenetrable
Forest, considered one of Africa's most biologically diverse forests.
Bwindi is best known for its resident gorillas -- approximately
300 live in the area. Spend a day trekking through the rainforest
for the rare opportunity to view these magnificent creatures in
the wild. After two nights in the Bwindi area, return to Kampala
(or Entebbe) for one night. Visit the chimp sanctuary on Ngamba
Island, run by the Jane Goodall Institute, before flying to Kigali,
Rwanda, for a night. Drive to Volcanoes National Park for trekking
and an opportunity to see gorillas in the Rwandan portion of the
Virunga Mountains. After two days in the park area, return to Kigali
for your flight to Entebbe and connect with your international departure.
Please note: Gorilla trekking is a physically arduous activity:
visitors might spend two to eight hours attempting to see gorillas
in their natural habitat. A reasonable degree of fitness and stamina
is required for this program.
