DR.
LIVINGSTONE'S FIRST FOOTSTEPS
(15 days/14
nights)
South Africa, Botswana, Victoria
Falls: Cape Town, Kalahari Desert, Chobe National Park, Victoria Falls
This program's itinerary follows in the footsteps of the legendary Dr. David Livingstone, one of the most renowned explorers in Africa. The famous journeyman spent most of his life traveling and mapping an extraordinarily vast part of Africa, profoundly influence the fate of the continent in the process. Livingstone's relationship with Africa began in 1841, when he arrived in Cape Town as a young missionary. His early years were spent in the region now known as South Africa and Botswana. Your journey tracing his steps begins in Cape Town, once a dusty coastal settlement and now one of Africa's most vibrant cities. While in this area, you will visit Cape Point and the luxurious Winelands, sampling the fine food and wine for which the region is now justly famed. Next, travel north to Botswana and spend three nights amid the haunting silence of the Kalahari Desert's Makgadikgadi Pans. You will stay at elegant Jack's Camp; the well-appointed safari tents are a world away from Livingstone's rustic rest stops. Spend two unforgettable days learning about the rich, indigenous culture, and imagine the amazement of the missionaries who arrived here in the mid-19th century. Game walks with San Bushman trackers and lessons in traditional hunting and gathering will immerse you in the natural wonder of the region. Next, travel to the Okavango Delta for three nights. We now treasure this as one of the world's greatest wildlife reserves, though early explorers saw the endless network of rivers, streams and swamps as an obstacle to their journeying and did not always appreciate it. Relax while drifting along in a traditional canoe watching elephants, lion, antelope, and a wealth of bird life. After the Delta, head to Chobe National Park, located on the banks of one of Southern Africa's most important rivers, and spend two nights exploring the park's varied topography. Conclude your journey with two nights at Victoria Falls, which Livingstone introduced to Westerners. The thundering waters are a sight of inspiring beauty and the area has become the adventure capital of Africa. Whether you enjoy the view over a cocktail or decide to try whitewater rafting or bungee jumping, Victoria Falls is a magnificent conclusion to your homage to Livingstone.
